Questions About Acura Hybrid

Sharon asks…

Trading in acura mdx for honda civic hybrid, how much depreciation in $ will mdx have?

mdx is 3 months old with slight scratches at the rear door. driven for 2500 miles
i had put in almost half its value when mdx was bought... kbb does not have trade in value for 2008 model.

MDXs (unfortunately) do NOT hold up well in the books. If you only bought it 3 mo nths ago, you are likely well upside down too. Did you put any cash down? Did you trade in a car you were upside down on?

If you answered "no" to 1, and "yes" to 2, you are an owner for the long forseeable future

go to www.kbb.com - look up the TRADE IN value for your car - and evaluate it as being in average condition. Then take $2000 off that and you will have approximately what your car is worth on trade.

EDIT - ah if it is a 2008, go to Edmunds.com and build an invoice for your car. Then deduct abouut 20% off invoice. That will get you close to the trade in value.

The problem with trading a current-year car is that the depreciation is greatest in the first year. As a buyer, there has to be a financial incentive to purchase a pre-owned 08 with 2500 miles and scratches. So, the resale value needs to be under current new value, therefore the big hit on first-year depreciation.

I know gas is high - but you will be taking a HUGE financial hit to sell out of the car now. The loss of value is biggest at this point.

Taking into account the difference in fuel economy, price of gas, and miles you drive, how long will it take you to break even, and recover the financial loss?

Nancy asks…

Acura TSX hybrid?

With honda pushing out their cars as hybrids, has anyone seen any information about an acura tsx hybrid?
I did google on it, but nothing

admin answers:

I agree with pjhj2006. The next gen TSX will be here in late 2007 as a 2008 model. If there will be a hybrid model, that is when it will be brought out. As for now, 22 city and 30 (or 31) highway MPG isn't going to kill you.

Linda asks…

Are the Honda Pilot or Acura MDX coming in a hybrid model soon?

admin answers:

Nope.. There won't be a hybrid Pilot or MDX anytime soon.

Honda is slated to release three new hybrids for next year though-- A hybrid Fit, a hybrid CR-Z sports car, and a Global Small Hybrid that doesn't yet have a name (but the spy photos show it strongly resembles a Toyota Prius).

All of them will be using Honda's mild-hybrid IMA system (which cannot move the car on electric alone).

William asks…

Has Honda/Acura made any announcements about hybrids in the Acura line?

I am thinking of buying a new car. It will be Hybrid. I want a Acura TL but may have to go to Honda accord to get hybrid. would wait some for a Acura Hybrid. Can't find any info on Acura hybrids or plans.

admin answers:

Honda has typically been rather quiet about an upcoming hybrid, usually only releasing info about a new one coming to the US market within a few months of its release.

(Currently Honda has hybrids:
* Insight (1st production hybrid on US roads, introduced in 1999 for the 2000 model year)
* Honda Civic Hybrid (introduced on Earth Day 2003 for the 2003 model year. It's 2nd design now for the 2006 model year.)
* Accord Hybrid (which is a performance hybrid and not a fuel efficiency hybrid, I don't recall the release date but it's not more than a year old...)
2006 is the last model year for the Insight, though, with only rumors about its replacement being maybe a hybrid Fit.)

If the luxury model line of the Hondas, the Acura line, is to get a hybrid drivetrain option, I would think that they'd do the same stealthy announce only when it is actually coming to market, like the other Honda hybrids...

As for the Toyota/Lexus thing, typically the Lexus hybrid comes out about the same time or earlier than the Toyota equivalent.
(In the US, the RX450H (Harrier) was out months before the Highlander Hybrid (Kluger) cousin, and the GS450H was out the same week as the Camry Hybrid.)
