Well in this segment all competitors consist Of the BMW X6-50i, Infiniti FX50, Porsche Cayenne S, which all have a starting MSRP of $60,000 and up while the Acura ZDX starts at an MSRP of $45,000 only offering one source of output power in terms of the engine, the ZDX only escalates in pricing when packages and options are added, the ZDX does not have a series of engines to choose from like BMW, Infiniti or Porsche, you pretty much get 300 HP at whatever MSRP you end up walking away with the ZDX. The Infiniti, BMW, and Porsche all have lower price tags aswell if you choose to go for the basic entry class model like the Bmw X6-35i, the Infiniti FX35 or the Porsche Cayenne base which all have a starting MSRP of $45,000 and up. Personally my two favorite Luxury Sport utility crossovers in this segment are the 2010 BMW X6 and the 2010 Infiniti FX50, the Porsche Cayenne was just recently redesigned and I have to say it looks 100 XX (times) better then its predecessor from last year. Porsche has really upgraded the exterior and interior appeal, it now lives up to Porsches standards in my book. The ZDX in terms power is the slowest contender in this segement. The ZDX produces 300 HP and unfortunatly they do not offer a more powerful engine, so basically "what you see is what you get." Acura as a player in the luxury auto industry has fallen behind year by year, this does not mean its is a bad car but they have been looked down upon rather then glorified for their work these past generations. Many criticize Acura for not having a luxury sports coupe this late into the decade, they dont offer a convertible like its Rivals and the power each vehicle inherits generartion after generation doesnt really budge by much for the money you are paying in an Acura. Many people who cross shop in this segment from Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Infiniti & Lexus never seem to end up settling for an Acura....it mostly starts from Acura and work your way up for those who are just beggining to test the waters with luxury entry class vehicles, it would make sense to start through Acura as they offer you bargian prices in this segment despite the standards equipped in each of their vehicles. But then again "to each his own". The ZDX is a sensible alternative to the X6, FX and Porsche Cayenne if your looking for something a bit more economical nevertheless equally as luxurious in thier own different ways. If your looking for something that will give you "more bang for your buck" your best bet is the 2010 Infiniti FX35 which outputs 303 HP or 390 Hp for the FX50. The FX35 has an MSRP of $43,715 which undercuts the ZDX by a couple hundred dollars, standard features include Bi-xenon Headlights, Rear view Camera, 11 speaker Bose sound system, Intelligent key and a 2 GB Music Box in all FX35 base models. If I had to choose between your choices of the ZDX, X6 or 5 series Grand turismo I would take the BMW X6 with my eyes closed.

Laura asks…

What is the difference between a crossover and an SUV built on a car frame?

I called the Acura dealer about the Acura RDX, and they said that the RDX is a crossover, and it is built on a car frame. I also called the Volvo dealer about the Volvo XC-90, and they said that it is built on a car frame, but it is an SUV (not a crossover). I always thought that an SUV is built on a truck frame, and any vehicle that resembles an SUV built on a car frame is a crossover. How is it that the Volvo XC-90 is still classified as an SUV even though it is built on a car frame? What other criteria are there for a vehicle to be classified as a crossover besides being an SUV-resembling vehicle built on a car frame?

admin answers:

The SUV segment is comprised of two types of vehicles - the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and the Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV-CVT-or just Crossover). There are over forty SUVs and almost thirty Crossovers that make up this segment. When PIN reported that SUVs were on the long tooth side of the dealers lot they were being kind to SUVs.

SUVs have actually been on the dealers lot for almost ninety days - that’s over two years in dog years and when a vehicle has been on a dealers lot that long it is no longer man’s best friend.

Crossovers are taking up the slack for SUVs by selling in 59 days. While SUVs make up 27 percent of the automotive industry, crossovers make up 40 percent of that market and ten percent of the total automotive industry. What is a crossover?

Depending on the type of vehicle you drive, a crossover can look like a station wagon or an SUV. While considered a station wagon by many, Subaru is a car base platform that is known as one of the original crossovers. If you’ve been in a sedan, a Subaru will look like an SUV. If you’re coming out of an SUV, a Subaru looks like a station wagon. The most common attributes of a crossover are;

Crossovers are usually front wheel drive
Crossovers usually have a lower center of gravity
Crossovers typically have less towing capacity
Crossovers get better miles per gallon (mpg)than SUVs
Crossovers can have a better resale value than an SUV
